Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary, Khalil Tate and others; reranking the 2016 recruiting class

Aug 21, 2018

The 2016 recruiting class was one of the most hyped classes in recent memory. After a run of five consecutive No. 1 classes, Alabama was unseated in 2016 by Florida State. The Seminoles' class was led by No. 5 overall recruit Levonta Taylor, one of nine players who earned five-star ratings from ESPN that year. Three years later, the class has by and large lived up to expectations and also produced some breakout stars. We examined how different the class would look if we reranked players based on their college production. Here are the top 25 players knowing what we know now.

ESPN 300 Hot Board Five-star predictions

Aug 17, 2018

Recruiting has slowed down a touch now that we are in a dead period and approaching the season. Most prospects will focus on their high school team and put recruiting on the back burner, and that includes some of the top prospects in the nation.

Of the 11 five-star recruits in the 2019 class, five remain uncommitted. While most of them are planning to wait to announce their decisions, there are a select few schools that stick out, helping to make predictions on where those recruits will eventually land. Here is a look at the uncommitted five-stars and where they currently stand.

True freshmen Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence compete for starting QB job

Aug 15, 2018Emailprint

Trevor Lawrence's reputation was already something of a local legend before he hit high school. His mom, Amanda, remembers being at a restaurant about a half-hour outside their hometown of Cartersville, Georgia, when a man nervously approached, asking for an autograph. Trevor was in eighth grade at the time.

Cartersville high school coach Joey King had heard the hype, too, and he knew Lawrence would be something special. But the first-year coach had another QB on the roster, a 6-foot-5 junior with a strong arm, too. Still, he was curious enough about the kid everyone was buzzing about to invite him out for spring practice, four months before Lawrence would officially begin high school.

Could quarterback J.T. Daniels go from high school junior to USC's starting lineup as Sam Darnold's successor? Daniels is among the first-year players who could make plays from the minute they step on the field.

Preseason all-ACC team, players to watch, words from the ACC commissioner and everything you need to know for the start of the season.

From the All-SEC team to power rankings and Heisman hopefuls, we've got you covered, gearing you up for college football Saturdays this fall.

Alabama Football: Freshman LB Jaylen Moody could contribute early

Jaylen Moody was little-heralded and a late addition to the Alabama football 2018 class. Before the 2018 season ends, he could be one play away from a key role in the defense. Star ratings, especially in the 5-star haven that is the Alabama football program, can be tricky. Across the football landscape, former 2-stars like JJ […]Alabama Football: Freshman LB Jaylen Moody could contribute early - Bama Hammer - Bama Hammer - An Alabama Crimson Tide Community - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.Original link

The must-watch games of the 2018 college football season

Ah, August: that glorious time of year when every FBS 1-A team has an unblemished record and the highest of hopes for the season ahead. By the time the calendar flips a few days into September, all too many of those hopes will have been dashed — but here’s a week-by-week look at the games that should make for great TV, regardless of what happens early in the season.

Matt Stamey-USA TODAY Sports

Week 1

Washington vs. Auburn: No first-week “cupcake” matchup for the Huskies or the Tigers. I hate to say a Week 1 game could have playoff implications, but this Week 1 game could have playoff implications. Two experienced, well-rounded defenses and a pair of buzz-worthy quarterbacks facing off at a neutral site easily make this the game of the week.

Michigan at Notre Dame: Another early contest between teams that hope to be in the end-of-season playoff discussion. Both of these squads have some question marks entering the season, not the least of which is: How hot are Jim Harbaugh's and Brian Kelly’s respective seats? Week 1 may not provide all the answers, but it’s a starting point. And for what it’s worth, ESPN’s "College GameDay" has chosen South Bend as the site of its opening-week broadcast.

Nick Saban says Jalen Hurts’ criticism will not affect QB situation

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Saban on Wednesday responded Jalen Hurts’ criticism of the coaching staff.

Hurts told the media on Saturday that none of the Alabama Crimson Tide Coaches had communicated with him or checked with him about how he was feeling about the quarterback competition. Hurts, who was the Crimson Tide’s starter the past two seasons, is competing with Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job. Tagovailoa came in after halftime of the national championship game and led the Tide to victory.

Saban says that Hurts’ comments and criticism will not affect the competition, via AL.com’s Michael Casagrande:

“I don’t think it has any effect on our team. I’ve talked to a lot of our team leaders. The players are focused on what they need to do. The rhetoric will not have anything to do with who’s the quarterback. That will obviously be decided on the field by how people execute, how they do their job."

Nick Saban: Jalen Hurts' comments won't have any impact on QB competition

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Recently, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts made national headlines for venting a bit about the quarterback competition, the transfer rumors that emerged this offseason, along with Nick Saban and his coaching staff.

“No one came up to me the whole spring, coaches included, no one asked me how I felt,” Hurts said, per AL.com. “No one asked me what was on my mind. No one asked me how I felt about the things that were going on. Nobody asked me what my future held.”

On Wednesday, Saban had a chance to respond, and it doesn’t sound like he holds a grudge whatsoever about what Hurts said.

“Every player has a right to express what he feels and what he thinks,” Saban said, via Michael Casagrande of AL.com. “And I think he has every right to do that with every coach or anybody in the organization that he has a relationship with, which we certainly do quite often with all players at all positions.”

Big Ten hopes for better NCAA tournament haul in 2018-19 season

Students across the country are slowly making their way back toward campus this month. Even though we're still months away from basketball season, it's time to take a look at topics that will be dominating conversation in the build-up to Big Ten hoops season.

Here are five questions for the Big Ten:

1. Michigan State2. Michigan3. Maryland4. Purdue5. Nebraska6. Wisconsin7. Indiana8. Ohio State9. Penn State10. Minnesota11. Iowa12. Northwestern13. Illinois14. Rutgers

1. Can the Big Ten rehab its postseason performance?

Michigan's run to the national championship game helped the Big Ten save a bit of face in the NCAA tournament, but it was still a disappointing postseason for the conference. Only four teams earned tourney bids -- the lowest total since 2008 -- and the drought for winning a national championship stretched to 18 years.
