Bryan Antoine commits to Villanova Wildcats

Sep 4, 2018Emailprint

Five-star guard Bryan Antoine announced his commitment to Villanova on Tuesday.

Antoine chose the Wildcats among a final five that also included Duke, Florida, Kentucky and Kansas. Duke was long thought to be the favorite for Antoine, but Villanova came on strong recently and got Antoine to commit before he began taking official visits.

Antoine, ranked No. 12 in the ESPN 100 for 2019, is the highest-ranked recruit to commit to Villanova since point guard Corey Fisher pledged back in the Class of 2007.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Ranney School (New Jersey) is among the best scorers in the class, averaging 16.6 points and shooting 41.0 percent from 3-point range on the Under Armour Association circuit for Team Rio National.

The defending national champions added a third player to their 2019 class.

Scout's Take safety Nick Cross to Florida State Seminoles

Sep 3, 2018

A few hours before Florida State kicked off its 2018 season, ESPN 300 safety Nick Cross gave his commitment to the Seminoles. Read below to see what Cross adds to head coach Willie Taggart's first complete class.

What he brings: Cross possesses a wealth of physical tools that can allow him to be a productive, versatile player. The four-star safety has a good blend of height and length and is an excellent overall athlete. He has the speed to be a sideline-to-sideline defender and flashes explosive ability to close. With a good blend of speed, quickness and size, he can be a scheme-versatile player in both man and zone coverage. He also is strong and physical enough to develop into an in-the-box safety. Cross demonstrates that he can be a good wrap-up tackler who can make plays in space.

Saban to use both Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa vs. Louisville

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

It looks as though Nick Saban is incapable of making a choice. Alabama’s head coach will use both Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback in their season opener on Saturday.

“I think we have two guys that are weapons and they’ve both played well, so the plan is to play both guys in the game,” Saban told ESPN's Chris Fowler. “So the only issue is who plays first, and we’ll decide that when the time comes.”

But eventually you have to decide, right? Competition is all well and good, but a quarterback rotation doesn’t often work. So, yes, Saban will ultimately have to hurt somebody’s feelings. Now we know that’s not a worry for him. We just don’t know how long he’s going to ride this idea.

“Just like every position, there’s good competition at quarterback,” Saban said back on August 21, via the ESPN.com report. “And nobody’s backing away from that competition.”

Tennessee Lady Volunteers dismiss Anastasia Hayes for violation of team rules

Aug 31, 2018Emailprint

Anastasia Hayes, a member of Tennessee's top-ranked recruiting class in 2017, is no longer with the team.

"Anastasia Hayes has been dismissed from the Tennessee women's basketball team due to a violation of team rules," coach Holly Warlick said in a statement Friday morning.

Hayes, a 5-foot-7 guard from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, averaged 9.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last season for the Lady Vols. She didn't start but averaged 24.3 minutes per game and was named the SEC's sixth woman of the year. Hayes hit her season high of 17 points twice, against East Tennessee State on Nov. 12 and in the SEC tournament quarterfinals against South Carolina on March 2.

Her exit means that Tennessee will return only one of its four top scorers from last season. Tennessee went 25-8 in 2017-18, falling to Oregon State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Tennessee opens the season Nov. 11 by hosting Presbyterian.

Each top 25 college football team’s most important player

Originally posted on Larry Brown Sports  |  By Grey Papke  |  Last updated 8/29/18

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

The college football season is upon us, which should have fans pumped across the country. Though it will take a while to get a sense for the best 25 teams in the country, we do have our preseason top 25 entering the first full slate of games. Those teams will be relying on some key players all season. Here is a look at the most important player for each of the preseason’s top 25 teams.

1) Alabama — Tua Tagovailoa, QB

After taking over the second half of the national championship game, Tagovailoa showed what he can do. He is mobile, fearless, and has a big arm. He can give Alabama the kind of big-play ability at quarterback they haven’t seen for a while — possibly ever. He has no shortage of talent around him, much of it NFL-level, and he has already demonstrated skill and poise in the most pressure-filled situation. Expect him to have a solid year at minimum.

Nick Saban compares Louisville QB Jawon Pass to Cam Newton

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Looking ahead to his program’s first game of the 2018 college football season against Louisville, Alabama head coach Nick Saban offered high praise for Cardinals quarterback Jawon Pass.

He compared Pass to former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, who’s now the franchise quarterback for the Carolina Panthers.

“I think he’s an outstanding, talented player,” Saban said, per AL.com. “Very, very good in high school. Has got great size. Very good arm talent. Very good athlete. He’s kind of a Cam Newton-looking type of guy out there and, when he had the opportunity to play last year, I thought he played very well and showed a lot of poise. They’ve got a very experienced offensive team, so I’m sure that that experience is going to help him and his confidence playing in that first game.”

That’s some heady stuff there, as it’s not like we see comparisons to Newton very often.

From Ethiopia to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a difficult but quick trip for Ajulu Thatha

By Katie Barnes | Aug 30, 2018espnW.com

Courtesy DeeEllen Davis

Ajulu Thatha learned how to play basketball and already has accepted a scholarship to play in college.

Basketball tucked under one arm, Ajulu Thatha steps out of her Indianapolis apartment and into a hot and humid July day. Her long braids flop over her shoulders as she hops into the front seat of the car. She's quiet. Until the topic turns to her newfound passion: basketball.

Thatha has played the sport for only five years, and she has been in the United States for only six. She was inspired to give basketball a try after attending an Indiana Fever game within months of her plane landing from Ethiopia.
